Last but not least.

Wow, what a journey. I can't believe how much I've learned throughout this Library 2.0 process. I must say that some of it was incredibly frustrating. I found some things not as relevant as they could be when it came to Libraries. But, with that said I can see the value in all those wonderful things. If I had one suggestion I would recommend making an account for all these websites just for our class. Then if you decided that you didn't want to sign up for everything under the sun you have that option. There are a few that I signed up for that I will never use and I wish that I could cancel some.

I loved wordle. I loved the website that helped you create your own posters. I'm way excited to use those in my library. I'm a little cautious about twitter but I can see it's use. I love my wiki. I'm very proud of it. I wowed the Murray High School Librarian. She was in the program last year and her wiki didn't get to relate to her library. I showed her how easy it was and she's excited to create one for her library. Overall, I'm thankful for this learning experience and I appreciate your insight and wisdom in the library media field. Thank you Anne.

Wordy Wordle

Wordle: Paradigm High Library This was so much fun to play with. I had a great time. I can't wait to make more. I'm still trying to learn how to change the size and make words stand out. I did learn that if you want to keep a phrase together then you put a dash. Whitney created one for her husband for their anniversary it turned out great.

Podcasts Pea Pod Podcasts do you like my alliteration that has nothing to do with it.

I looked at the other podcast websites but I have itunes so I just checked into that. I went to the book podcasts and found some interesting things.

For example they had one called
Meet the Author when I checked it is seemed to be more adult authors but who knows.
I also found the
NPR Book Podcast
Librivox Audio books. My school taps into this one for the special ed students
B & N One on One
Plato the Republic just the title sounded interesting

The most exciting one I found was called Book Lust with Nancy in Seattle. It was very fascinating. I listened to the one with Stephaine Meyer. Even though I don't really like the Twilight books. It was fun to listen to and I enjoyed it.

I'm glad I looked into it because now I can listen to some on my ipod when possible.

http://www.podcastalley.com/podcast_details.php?pod_id=54019 It's a podcast about Healthy Eating. My foods teacher has me checking out healthy eating stuff.

So, I typed in Librarian and Library in Twitter and I've never heard more swearing in my life. I heard the F word twice in one page. Where's my soap so I can wash everyone's mouth out. LOL I didn't find too much worthy info about libraries. I did find one librarian who looked like I would like to possibly "tweet" them but no one else. Everyone else seemed to talk about how they just went to the library or they had to go to the library to study etc.

Keith Richards http://twitter.com/info2go that's the librarian I found.

I actually got better results when I typed in REAL LIBRARIANS. interesting. I finally typed in library events and I found the following people.

effinghamlibrar
aMAYzin
RestoreMedia

I typed in Utah Library and found these
usmleforums
StateLibrary

To go add twitter it to your blog goodies, add to your website
Being in a high school library I am definitely serving digital natives. I can see possibly using it amongst my fellow students. I'm not sure if my administration will go for it though. I highly doubt it.

I appreciate the list of librarians who tweet because I sure struggled finding viable tweeters.

RSS and Newsreaders

I Know my brother has talked about this and I've always wondered how it works. This is a cool idea. I'm a little frustrated trying to get the Google LIbrary News up in my bloglines. I like having all my blogs in one place along with other news worthy items. All my families have blogs and I know of several library blogs that I wouldn't mind following. Can you follow wikis too? I also struggled getting flickr on there. What am I doing wrong?

I've posted Anne's response to my technical issues. Thank you so much. You are always so great to answer our questions.

4. Go to Google news
Do a search you would like to do every day to see if anything new has come up.
school library for example
at the bottom of your results page you see the orange RSS square.
Click on it.
You now arrive on a Subscribe to this feed using .... page
Select Bloglines from the drop down box.
Voila!

5.
Go to flickr. Do a search. NOTE: search GROUPS not PHOTOS
You get search results.
Select a particular group if you have more than one.
At the bottom of the group's page is the orange RSS square.
Click on it.
You now arrive on a Subscribe to this feed using .... page
Select Bloglines from the drop down box.

Alternatively you find a photographer you like and then you do the same thing (subscribe to their photostream).
Go to the RSS square etc. etc.

Another tip don't you Internet Explorer or Safari to add RSS feeds use Firefox

Library 2.0

http://www.schoollibraryjournal.com/article/CA6330755.html

This article found in the School Library Journal is great. I've copies a few exerts that I might remember some of the important idea he talked about. I will then put my own commentary in capital letters.

School libraries need to extend services beyond the four walls of the media center. One thing I see for the digitally re-shifted library is moving into nontraditional educational spaces.

WITH THE STUDENTS BEING DIGITAL NATIVES IT ONLY MAKES SENSE TO BRING MORE TECHNOLOGY INTO THE LIBRARY. LIBRARY 2.0 IS A GREAT WAY TO DO THAT. I'M STILL NOT TOTALLY CLEAR WHAT LIBRARY 2.0 IS? MY UNDERSTANDING IS IT IS USING ALL THE LEARNING 2.0 WEBSITES ETC TO INTEGRATE INTO YOUR LIBRARY RIGHT?

For example, using their integrated library system, librarians can help reading specialists assess students’ progress by tracking the use of leveled readers and other books. Going a step further, we could create an interface that would allow students to build a virtual collection of their favorite books by letting them copy a record to display on their “bookshelf.” Perhaps students could rate the titles and add comments, giving the reading specialist greater insight into the student’s relationship to the book.

I LOVE THE IDEA OF THEM CREATING THEIR OWN BOOKSHELF LIKE ON LIBRARY THING OR GOOD READS.

You can further stimulate a dialogue by establishing a “Book Talk” program through voicemail. Many schools are moving to digital phone systems that can deliver voicemail messages to an e-mail account in the form of an MP3 file. So set up a special “Book Talk” phone number so students can submit their contributions from their cellphones. These efforts are not much different from what school librarians have been doing all along—encouraging reading.

THIS WOULD BE FUN TO FIGURE HOW TO MAKE IT WORK.

One librarian, Robert Eiffert, from Pacific Middle School in Vancouver, WA, has created a new space for sharing book reviews on Pacific’s School Library BookBlog (beiffert.net/liblog). While some students contribute to the blog toward earning a grade, others continue to post and help maintain the community out of a love for reading, according to Eiffert. Two students, Kandise and Raynah (screen names), rule the site and strongly encourage their peers to stay focused. What do these blog masters expect? “I want a nice, neat little thread,” says Kandise. “The same with pictures, nice, neat, and small.” She recommends that other libraries start their own book blogs. “They are a fun way to find new books to read and post about,” says Kandise.

I LIKE THE IDEA OF TEACHERS MAKING IT AN ASSIGNMENT. ONE MORE WAY TO INVOLVE THE TEACHERS.

Digitally re-shifting your school library is about harnessing the power of new ideas like Web 2.0 to help fulfill the mission of school libraries. It does not necessarily mean discarding the old, but rather reconsidering what works best in meeting new challenges in a changing educational world. It’s all a part of helping students become literate users of information in order for them to have successful careers in school and beyond. Remember that for some students, a rich school library experience may be their only library experience. Let’s use every opportunity to help our students engage the joy of reading and the power of information.

THIS ARTICLE TRULY OPENED MY EYES TO THINGS I HAD NOT THOUGHT ABOUT. I REALIZE I QUOTED A LOT FROM THE ARTICLE BUT I DID CITE THE WEBSITE AT THE TOP AND I WANTED TO CAPTURE THE IDEAS THAT I GOT EXCITED ABOUT. THANK YOU SCHOOL LIBRARY JOURNAL.

Technorati is it techie??

The different categories I found on Technorati were as follows Entertainment, Business, Sports, politics, auto, technology, living, green, and science. Of course, the book blog seemed to be well represented it had a high number of blogs on books. It's nice to know that people are still reading out there. Living blogs doubled against politics blogs. Religion was at about 3,300 where Food was at 7200. The categories that are lacking seem to be music real estate and golf are just to name a few.

When I went to search this is what I found. I typed in Fablehaven because I'm obsessed with the books lately. I found one blog post and no blogs dedicated to it. I then typed in Eric Carle. I found his blog which is adorable I might add. But no blog posts on him. I then typed in Healthy Eating. I found quite a bit on both. I seems in order to find posts you have to use a general topic that fascinates people. I realize I typed in authors and they are little more obscure but I found my search fascinating. I am also wondering in order for your blog to be brought up by technoriati do you have to tell them about you? I find that not as helpful because I've never heard of it until today. I think it's fun but who knows how much I'll use it.

Delicious is not so yummy

I was not impressed with delicious bookmarking website. I liked the concept of being able to pull up my bookmarks on any computer. The idea is a great idea but I didn't find it applicable in a school library. I could see using it personally but not at school. This is why I feel that way. The search wasn't very helpful. It pulled up a lot of websites that didn't have anything to do with the topic. It doesn't seem to filter websites that are appropriate. It wasn't very user friendly. I think many schools will have a filter that won't let it through. I don't think I will use it much. Not impressed.

I made this on signgenerator.com wow it was fun to play around with. Thanks Anne for these great websites. They are giving me all kinds of great ideas to promote my library.

Library Thing is a fun idea here is the url

Rollyo is a great tool for school media specialists because it allows you to create a custom search engine. You specify which websites the search engine should use to search. You can add only those websites that you know are reliable and would be good for your students to use. This is called creating a search roll.

WIKI

Wow, I have never been so confused trying to figure something out. It's not feeling very user friendly to me.

I probably shouldn't try to do stuff like this when I'm tired. I've had a big week in the library. It started with training the entire staff on how to use my library software. Then I presented a copyright info and ended with how to use Pioneer Online Library. The staff was very receptive and I feel it went well. I had to present it 5 times to 6-7 mentors at a time. It forced me to learn more info so that I could present.

This afternoon I conducted another meeting. It was for the library committee. I trained them further on how to use Titlewave from Follett Library Resources. It's an incredible website to search books. I love it.

I'm also trying to organize a book fair to get more books in the library. We don't have a PTA at my school and so I'm kind of the head guru getting this off the ground. It's a little overwhelming trying to do it all. I did find a parent today to help me organize my volunteers for it. There is just too much going on right now.

As I watched the Wiki intro video I could the see the value and how it really helps people collaborate. I got excited because at faculty meeting this week we were discussing simulations. We are trying to collaborate through email on what we want to do. As I watched the Wiki video I got excited realizing that it will be a great tool to help us work together.

I am feeling a little confused about the wiki being free. It looks like there is a fee for an educator wiki so I'm not sure what that means? Rachel Murphy, Kearns High School Librarian has an incredible wiki that blow my mind. I visited her for my practicum and she' incredible. I look forward to figuring this out further.

The URL for my Wiki is http://www.paradigmlibary.pbworks.com

I changed my URL to wikispaces I am much more happy with it. It is much more user friendly. MY URL is now http://pages4patriots.wikispaces.com

This is where my library journey all began. I walked into a room with furniture every where, books in stacks in who knows what order. Some books had barcodes some did not. Many were on shelves and somewhat organized but they desperately needed to be weeded. The librarian before me had gotten angry and ripped everything off the walls and stormed out. It took me forever to even find out what the password was. I didn't know how to use Follett Destiny Software. I had no clue how to even be a librarian. I was so overwhelmed that day and I wondered what I had gotten myself into. I took it a day at at time and look what I created. It's kind of cool to look back. I took this picture right before I was asked to leave because of budget cuts. It was a very sad day in my professional life. I had created a magical place and had to walk away. On to the next journey.

71/2 habits of highly effective people

I am having a great time setting this up. It's nice to have an excuse to play around with this blog thing. I'm still trying to change my template but I'll figure it out sooner or later.

The 7 1/2 habits of life long learners was interesting to evaluate. It kind of reminds me of Stephen Covey and his 7 habits. I liked the 7 1/2 steps.

Begin with the end in mind. When I began this library endorsement class I knew I wanted to learn more about libraries but I never realized how much there really was to learn. When I receive this endorsement I will feel much more prepared to do my job well as a librarian.

Accept responsibility for your own learning. You can get as little or as much as you want from these endorsement courses. It's one thing for them to mention a great idea in class its another thing to actually search it out after the class is over. Implementation is also the key.

View problems as challenges In my library right now I view my lack of budget as a challenge. I have a library of donated books right now. Do you know anyone who donates their favorite book? The challenge that has been put before me is to work with what I have. Search for ways to find funds. Create the library as a great place to be.

Have confidence in yourself as a competent effective learner. I remember when I was in high school and I was taking my last math class. Math was never my thing and frankly I hated it. My dad finally sat down one day and said, "Em who says your bad at math?" I never get good grades and I can't figure it out. He finally said to me, "Em start telling yourself that you can do it and see what happens." So, did I magically start getting straight A's in math absolutely not, math makes no sense to me. But I went from getting C- to B's and that was huge for me. It was all about gaining confidence in me learning math. HMMM...

Create your own learning tool box. Some of us learn better by seeing, others are tactile, some learn better by hearing. I know for me I am a hands on girl, that is something that is in my toolbox. I am also very visual. If I can draw a picture to help me remember I learn it better. It's also important for me to take notes. I can't be listening and doing something else. I know that about myself for example I can't do homework with the TV on.

Use technology to my advantage. I can't believe how much I have learned about technology in my job the last 2 years as a librarian. I can't believe how much more I have to go. I've noticed it more being in a high school library they are so much more technologically savvy.

Teach and mentor others. You always learn something better if you teach it. At my school we call the teachers mentors instead of teachers. I like it because it puts the teacher in a learning position as well as the student.

Play. We live in a world where we have a hard time relaxing. I love this because it reminds us to lighten up and enjoy.

Areas as a librarian where I am strong:
Children's literature-especially picture books
Teaching a love of reading
cataloging
organizing a library
circulation
purchasing for an elementary library and its needs
Microsoft Word

Areas where I am not strong yet:
higher level chapter books and novels
Classic book reading
teaching information literacy
Microsoft Excel
